OUR ROOTS

SPHT’s roots trace back to Waymarks Consultancy Ltd., established in 2001, a mental wellness and psychosocial practice established after years of dedicated service in the field.  Waymarks Consultancy, based in Karen, Nairobi, Kenya provided a variety of essential services:

Individual counseling and psychotherapy

We helped individuals navigate mental health challenges and achieve personal growth.

Gender-based specialized services for women.

We noticed that most of the clients coming for group and individual therapy were women, battling with a wide range of issues.

Corporate wellness programs

We partnered with companies to enhance employee well-being and mental health awareness.

Community development initiatives

We collaborated with organizations to deliver psychosocial services and family wellness programs within communities.

This extensive experience, coupled with Ms. Shibero Akatsa’s deep passion for mental health, spanning over 25 years, laid the foundation for the creation of SPHT.

Building on a Legacy of Hope: Addressing Depression in African Communities

As established, the Shibero Psychosocial Health Trust (SPHT) emerged from a deep commitment to mental and emotional well-being.  However, our specific focus on depression in African communities stems from personal experience and a growing awareness of this often-unaddressed challenge.

Motivated by Personal Experience and Community Need

Ms. Shibero Akatsa’s own experience with depression, coupled with the tragic loss of a loved one to this treatable condition, was a catalyst for SPHT’s mission.

Witnessing firsthand the devastating effects of untreated depression within her community, particularly amongst women and families grappling with chronic stress, demanding family dynamics, and cultural pressures, solidified Ms. Akatsa’s resolve to make a difference.

Early Service Delivery: Overcoming Resource Constraints

For over two decades, Ms. Akatsa diligently served the community, driven by a deep passion for mental health. Recognizing the limited access to traditional therapy and support groups, she took a proactive approach, providing essential services even with limited resources.

Broadening Our Focus: Mental Health Awareness for Youth

In addition to supporting women and families, SPHT recognized the growing need amongst underserved youth communities.

Programs like Selar Singles and Pamoja Tunainuka addressed depression management and fostered resilience in young people, equipping them with tools to overcome challenges and thrive.

Amplifying Our Impact

While our achievements are noteworthy, they also highlight the significant potential that remains untapped due to limited resources.
